HBCU Band of the Year 2015

There’s no question that the number one spot went to the Sonic Boom of the South, the Jackson State University Marching Band. The band received 17,701 votes, earning 21% of the vote. The program began in 1971 and has even made halftime appearances for or the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals. About the "Sonic Boom"

The “Sonic Boom” Marching Band has performed many halftime appearances for the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals; a television special for Motown’s 30th Anniversary and the 34th NAACP Image Awards, with a special guest performance by “Cedric the Entertainer.” The band is a favored entry in halftime performances during football season as well as for parades across Mississippi and in other states. The Jackson State University Marching Band was dubbed The Sonic Boom of the South in 1971 by students in the band.

Sonic Boom Excels in Top 20 Cover Songs of 2016

The Sonic Boom of the South has two songs in the Top 20 HBCU Cover Songs. Whip Appeal (Babyface) which ranked No. 3 and Toccata and Funk in D Minor (Walter Murphy) which ranked No.1. It is no doubt that the Sonic Boom is the best band in the land; the Summa Cum Laude of Bands. Read more
