Band Audition Standards

BAND SCHOLARSHIPS AND BAND PARTICIPATION AUDITION STANDARDS

I. Level I Priority, Maximum Expectations (Out-of-State Fee Waiver and $6-$8,000 Annually [totaling around $11-$13,000 annually])
 
A. The potential band student must be in good standing with their high school band director(s)/program. Your high school band director may be contacted by the JSU Band Staff. A letter of recommendation from your band director(s) are preferred but not required.
B. Grade point average of at least 3.00 (B average or higher), regular admission to the University
C. Outstanding tone quality/quality of sound
D. Chromatic Scale: Practical range of the instrument
E. Major Scales: C, F, G, Bb, D, Eb, A, Ab, E, B, Db, & Gb (please see #2 located below)
F. Minor Scales: A, D, E, G, & C (Natural Minor)
G. Broken Chords and Thirds using the scales listed in items E and F
H. Prepared Material: Etude (Study) and/or Solo Grade 4 or higher, honor band etudes are acceptable (this does not include concert band literature, standard wind band marches, nor contemporary pop tunes)
I. (PERCUSSION ONLY) All 26 basic American rudiments in the “open-close-open” format, perform an advance level snare drum etude/solo (concert or rudimentary) AND ALSO melodic proficiency by playing all 12 major scales and performing a mallet percussion etude/solo. All are required to be eligible for the award specified.
J. Sight-reading performed at a very high/proficient level (provided by JSU Band Staff)
 
II. Level II Priority, Medium Expectations (Out of State Fee Waiver and $1-$5,000 Annually [totaling around $6-$10,000 annually])
 
A. The potential band student must be in good standing with their high school band director(s)/program. Your high school band director may be contacted by the JSU Band Staff. A letter of recommendation from your band director(s) are preferred but not required.
B. Grade point average of at least 2.70 (C+ average or higher), regular admission to the University
C. Acceptable  tone quality/quality of sound
D. Chromatic Scale: Practical range of the instrument
E. Major Scales: C, F, G, Bb, D, Eb, A, Ab, E, B, Db, & Gb (please see #2 located below)
F. Broken Chords and Thirds using the scales listed in items E
G. Prepared Material: Etude (Study) and/or Solo Grade 3 or higher, honor band etudes are acceptable (this does not include concert band literature, standard wind band marches, nor contemporary pop tunes)
H. (PERCUSSION ONLY) All 26 basic American rudiments in the “open-close-open” format, performing an medium-advance level snare drum etude/solo (concert or rudimentary).
I. Sight-reading performed at a proficient level (provided by JSU Band Staff)
 
III. Level III Band Participation, Minimum Expectations (Non Scholarship)
 
A. The potential band student must be in good standing with their high school band director(s)/program. Your high school band director may be contacted by the JSU Band Staff. A letter of recommendation from your band director(s) is/are preferred but not required.
 
Note:
1. Minimum tempo for scales, chords, and thirds; Level I Priority, quarter note=96, Level II Priority, quarter note=88, and Level III, Band Participation, quarter note=60 using eight notes or sixteen notes
2. All scales must encompass the practical range of the instrument. Scales must be tongued ascending and slurred descending
