Mr. Roderick Little, Instructor of Music and Associate Director of Bands/Marching Band Director

Roderick Little is currently serving as Marching Band Director at Jackson State University.  He received his Bachelors and Masters in Music Education respectively from Jackson State University and is currently finishing his Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education Administration.  A native of Jackson MS, he grew up in a musical family/background.  During his tenure at Jackson State University he participated in several ensembles including the famous “Sonic Boom of the South” where he played in the percussion section as a snare drummer, served as part of the Jackson Five Drummajor squad, a student arranger and he also served as a student conductor of the Symphonic Band.   After receiving his undergraduate degree from J.S.U., he went to his high school alma mater, Lanier High School, where he served as Director of Bands for four years where his bands received excellent and superior ratings.

Mr. Little started his tenure at Jackson State in the fall of 2012 where he served as an Assistant Band Director/Instructor of music and was promoted to Associate Director of Bands (2013) and later Marching Band Director (2015).  While Director of the Marching Band, Little has maintained the rich traditions of the Sonic Boom while adding unique twist with the use of technology and other innovative ideas. Mr. Little started several outreach programs at Jackson State including the Summer High School Band Camp and A Day With the Boom which both act as major recruitment agents for the program grossing over 4-600 students collectively.  His other duties include directing the concert band ensemble(s) and teaching percussion at JSU in which he obtained several new instruments through NASM upgrades (an initiative started by Dr. Owen Rockwell and Dr. Darcie Bishop), including steel pans, for the percussion studio.  Little also observed student teachers during their clinical teaching experience.

Mr. Little is an accomplished conductor, clinician, adjudicator, composer, arranger, drill writer, and instrumentalist.  He has arranged for numerous middle/high schools, colleges, chamber groups, jazz ensembles and church conventions.  He has also scored piano music for F & S Music KC Publishing Company, which was founded by Lannie Spann McBride (previously instructor of music at J.S.U. and revered church motivator/musician).  He has performed with local groups around Jackson MS, and momentarily in Houston TX.   Mr. Little has studied under Owen Rockwell whom in which is his predecessor at J.S.U.  His professional affiliations are The National Association for Music Education (NAFME), Percussive Art Society (PAS), Mississippi Association of Education (MAE), Mississippi Band Masters Association (MBA), HBCU National Band Directors Consortium (HBCU-NBDC) and College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA).

Mr. Little is married to Lynise Little whom he met at J.S.U. in the “Sonic Boom.”  They both were the first to do a joint recital at J.S.U. showcasing the music of both the classical and contemporary jazz genres.  They have two sons, Aiden and Alec Little.
