2016 JSU Summer High School Band, Dance & Drummajor Camp


Description: Come join the famous Sonic Boom of the South as we give you an extensive look into what it takes to be a part of the “Summa Cum Laude of Bands!”  We offer an array of different ensembles to participate in coupled with the marching band.  The ensembles will include but are not limited to: Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band(s), Brass wind Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble. We will be offering master classes held by the renowned Sonic Boom band staff and other accomplished band directors which will include but not limited to the following: Leadership Skills, Classroom Management, Field Show Content, Arranging, Instrumental Pedagogy and much more.  There will also be outstanding social events for student enjoyment!  
The camp is opened to advanced 8th graders through graduating H.S. Seniors. Drummajors will learn conducting and mace routines, and will learn a famous “Get Ready” routine, and also be featured in the field show. All Drummajors will have to play their instruments during camp.  Dancers will learn comprehensive dance techniques and field/stand routines patterned after the “Thrill of a Billion Eyes” the Prancing J-Settes.

HBCU Band of the Year 2015

There’s no question that the number one spot went to the Sonic Boom of the South, the Jackson State University Marching Band. The band received 17,701 votes, earning 21% of the vote. The program began in 1971 and has even made halftime appearances for or the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals. About the "Sonic Boom"

The “Sonic Boom” Marching Band has performed many halftime appearances for the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals; a television special for Motown’s 30th Anniversary and the 34th NAACP Image Awards, with a special guest performance by “Cedric the Entertainer.” The band is a favored entry in halftime performances during football season as well as for parades across Mississippi and in other states. The Jackson State University Marching Band was dubbed The Sonic Boom of the South in 1971 by students in the band.
